Fall Checklist: Are You Prepared for Seasonal Water Damage?

10/16/2015 (Permalink)

Whether it’s a pipe leak or a house flood, fall can be a popular season for water damage. As the seasons change, pipes can freeze and burst, gutters can overflow and the foundation of your home can weaken. Water damage can, of course, also lead to mold, which can be harmful to the health of your family. To avoid these issues, SERVPRO of Yorba Linda/Brea has prepared a quick checklist for you and your family to follow to prepare your home for this Autumn season.

1. Clean Your Gutters: Leaves are falling, and right now is prime time for gutter clogging. With all the dirt and debris falling from the trees and into your gutters, your gutters can easily overflow. If a gutter is clogged, water cannot drain properly and can easily make its way into your home. The water can also build up into your roof and cause it to start rotting away. Clean all your gutters and test your downspouts. Make sure everything is draining properly. This is not something that can just be done once at the beginning of the season and then ignored for a few months. Gutters require constant maintenance in the fall months, so add it to the Honey Do lists every Sunday.

2. Monitor Your Landscaping: Trim your trees and cut your flowers and bushes so they aim away from the house, specifically the foundation. Plants are a great way for water to sneak down into any foundation cracks, so keep them maintained constantly. Also be sure your gutters are not draining into these flower beds, as it can flood the garden and leak into the house.

3. Test Your Sump Pump: Especially if you have a basement (but even if you don’t), be sure to get your sump pump tested annually. Can’t remember the last time it was tested? Schedule an appointment now, so you know when to do it next year.

4. Check pipes leaking with age? Get them all fixed and monitored now. The sooner you get them fixed, the less of a problem they will be in the future. Catching a leak early also means a lower chance of water damage in the future.

If you have any questions as to how to get your home ready for fall and prepared for any impending water damage, give SERVPRO of Yorba Linda/Brea a call today. We are happy to help take care of any and all water damage issues you may have in your home!
