Taking Care of Your New Home: Tips for First Time Homebuyers on Preventing Water Damage

10/14/2015 (Permalink)

It’s your first home--congratulations! It’s an exciting time for you right now for sure. But as much as we hate to be the bearer of bad news, keeping your brand new home in perfect condition is harder than it looks. At SERVPRO of Yorba Linda/Brea, this means doing everything in our power to help you keep water damage a far-away concern. After all, the last thing you want is for your brand new home to fall victim to damage that you could have avoided in the first place. Here are some tips as to keep your home free of water damage.

1. Do Your Research: We cannot stress the importance of this enough. Hopefully you did this before you bought your home, but know exactly what the pipe and water situation looks like in your house. Are the pipes old and rusted? Does your hot water tank need to be replaced? These are all things that can and should be in working order before you move in.

2. Pay Attention at the Inspection: Continuing further in the above issue, pay attention to your home inspector. As they go through, ask questions. Take notes. And more than that, check things out for yourself as well. There might be something they overlook that you find needs to be checked out. If they note it in the inspection, you can ask for just about anything to be replaced (or at least ask for the credit).

3. Get a Second Opinion: And we don’t necessarily mean the home inspector. Bringing a relative or friend along who isn’t buying the home might be able to spot something you’d miss. You’re in love with the house, and that’s to be expected, but they don’t have those love blinders you do. That crack in the garage that you think is gives the home character might be the result of previous water damage or mold.

When it comes to your new home, SERVPRO of Yorba Linda/Brea only wants the best for you. If you have moved into your home and found some previous water damage, give us a call immediately. We are happy to help you out!
