Frustrated Homeowner Turns to SERVPRO for Help

5/22/2015 (Permalink)

Water damage is always frustrating. It’s so hard to sit back and watch as water damages the home and possessions that you love. What’s even more frustrating is when insurance companies refuse to pay for the work that really needs to be done. Unfortunately, if water damage is caused by improper home maintenance, most insurance companies will require the homeowner to pay. Water damage is expensive, so it is completely understandable that homeowners get angry when insurance refuses to help.

For one homeowner, a leak in a pipe in his shower meant little-to-no help from the insurance company. He noticed his bathroom flooding one day and called a plumber, who came out and diagnosed a break in the shower pipe. The homeowner called his insurance company, who informed him that he would not be covered because the leak occurred as a result of lack of maintenance. The only thing they would cover is the use of equipment to dry out the damage, but no demolition would be covered.

When we received the call, we sent out our Production Manager, Chris Trejo, to the job. He set up some dehumidifiers and desiccants to remove some of the water damage, but we knew some of the tile really should be removed. Unfortunately, the homeowner knew he could not afford for the tile to be removed.

We worked with him and ultimately decided to do everything we could to dry the tile in place. We set up more fans and dehumidifiers to get the tile as dry as possible. We also let him know that if he chose to remove the tile as we recommended, we would be able to work with him on the price since it would be a self-pay.

Ultimately, though frustrated with the lack of cooperation with the insurance company, the homeowner was pleased with how we handled the situation. He assured us that our work was top-notch, and loved that we were able to accommodate all his needs.
