We watched the news of the approaching nightmare for a week.  As the forecast turned into certainty and certainty turned into devastation, our team at SERVPRO Yorba Linda/ Brea felt a conviction that we had to act.  Sitting this one out was not an option so we filled our trucks with equipment and made the long, continental drive from the west coast where life is mostly warm and calm toward an east coast that was being battered by a massive storm.  

Our team spent three weeks there, helping the victims of hurricane Florence gain a foothold on lives that had suddenly turned upside down.

We met a widow named Cynthia Summerfield on that trip.  Her home had experienced overwhelming mold damage after the rain and flooding her Florida home had experienced and she was that time living in assisted living in a nearby hotel.  Cynthia's health was already compromised; she was constantly dragging on her inhaler to breathe more easily.  The extensive mold that had gripped every room in her home required that we gut her home.  Sections of her roof had been ripped off by violent hurricane winds.  

It took us over a week to complete the work we did there; demolition of nearly all the drywall, spraying all the exposed studs with microbial spray and scrubbing them clean of every last inch of mold.  We had to dry the entire structure.  Her nearly roofless home had to be tarped since the heavy demand for roofer services meant a long delay before anyone would get to her house.  

Mrs. Summerfield needed a friend who would calm her, keep her informed and reassure her that everything was going to work out all right.  

Our project manager, Caesar Arcila, ended up staying at the same hotel our customer was in and they met daily over breakfast for updates.
