Shower Overflow Leads to Water Damage

7/6/2015 (Permalink)

California is notorious right now for its drought. With this in mind, it’s important to keep an eye on all your plumbing for water leaks. What’s more important (though seemingly more obvious), make sure to turn off your sinks and showers when you aren’t using them! So much wasted water comes from plumbing problems, so not only will it lower your water bill and help conserve water, it could even prevent you from experiencing water damage in your home.

One homeowner in Fountain Valley recently had to deal with water damage resulting from an overflow in her shower. She turned on the shower and then went downstairs to grab something while the water warmed, but then completely forgot about the shower and left it running. Unfortunately, this resulted in an overflow of the shower, damaging the surrounding areas. Even further, the water leaked from the bathroom down through the floor and into the ceiling of the bathroom and garage on the first floor.

When she noticed the problem, she shut off the water but knew she would need professional help with the cleanup. She called her insurance company to see who they would recommend, and they told her to call SERVPRO of Yorba Linda/Brea. We immediately sent out our Production Manager, Cesar Arcila, to the job. When he saw the damage, he knew SERVPRO of Yorba Linda/Brea would be able to help, but first he would need to contain the damage. He set up a few pieces of equipment to make sure the water damage did not spread, and then called our expert technicians to come out and take care of the job.

When the technicians arrived, we immediately got to work. We had to remove some of the drywall in both bathrooms and the garage, as well as some of the ceiling in the garage. From there, we dried everything out with fans and dehumidifiers to keep mold from growing.

The homeowner was thrilled that we were able to salvage so much of the home! She knows now who to call if she ever leaves the shower on again.
