Slab Leak Claims Yorba Linda Kitchen

3/12/2015 (Permalink)

Water damage is a bummer, but can be manageable when your insurance is there to back you up. But what happens when it isn’t? On some rare occasions, if the water damage is due to a lack of upkeep on the house, an insurance company can deny the claim.

A homeowner in Yorba Linda learned this the hard way. She noticed the hardwood flooring in her kitchen was wet, and wanted to call a plumber, thinking it was a pipe leak. After visiting the home, the plumber said he would not be able to work on the slab leak until a water damage company removed some of the damaged areas. Having had previous leaks in her home in 2010 and 2011, the homeowner knew the best water damage removal company in the area was SERVPRO of Yorba Linda/Brea and called us immediately.

Because it was around 7:30 on a Saturday, we sent out one of our after-hours first responders, Cesar Arcila, to the home to scope out the damage. He determined it was a slab leak and set up a couple dehumidifiers to prevent the damage from worsening, and then sent out our Production Manager, Chris Trejo to take care of the rest.

When we began removing the drywall, we noticed there was a little mold as well. This indicated the slab leak was a long-term problem, which in turn had the insurance companies telling the homeowner that they would not cover the problem. We worked with her on the price, lowering it so it was manageable since she would be paying herself.

Though we had to remove parts of the cabinets and some drywall, we were able to save 100 percent of the granite counter tops, which made the homeowner incredibly happy. She was so happy, she called us after all the work was done just to thank us and let us know that she would be calling again if something else happened in the future!
