Brea Home Flooded By Fire Sprinkler System

4/15/2016 (Permalink)

Although the likelihood of a fire sprinkler malfunctioning is rare, there are instances where it can happen. The most common causes are overheating, freezing, corrosion, mechanical damage and human error. When a malfunction in the system occurs, the sprinklers will engage and can potentially flood an entire home in a matter of minutes. At SERVPRO of Yorba Linda/Brea, we have seen this type of water damage in the past and are always ready to help no matter what.

We recently received an emergency call from a Brea homeowner in the middle of the night. The fire sprinkler system in their home was flooding their entire house! They were frantic on the phone, but our staff was able to calm them down and assure them that they had called the right place!

We immediately dispatched Project Manager, Uriel Valencia, along with Crew Chief, Irineo Chavez, to the house. We knew that this job was going to be a big one and that we would have to get started right away, so our technicians also made their way over to the home. Once the sprinklers were turned off, we began the water removal process and boy was there a lot of water.

After approximately five hours of working on the removal, we were able to better assess the situation. It was apparent that the family would need to relocate, so we left them as they came up with a plan for their temporary living situation. Once they were out of the house and settled into a hotel, we rented a storage unit, packed all of their belongings and moved them to the unit. Unfortunately, all of the carpet, pad, and drywall in the entire home had to be removed. We then placed a bunch of dehumidifiers and air movers to help bring down the moisture level in the home. After the equipment was removed, all of the studs were sanded down to make sure all the moisture was out of the wood. This was done to ensure that no mold growth happened.

This water removal job was a big one, but after two months of work, the family was able to return to their home. They were so happy they called SERVPRO of Yorba Linda/Brea to take care of the water removal. They gave us a perfect ten on our customer survey and said they would refer us in a heartbeat. We’re happy to have made a customer for life!
